Tribute to Gene Dovenbarger 1944 - 2019
 

Harold Gene Dovenbarger, 74, passed away peacefully from complications due to a stroke on January 24, 2019, in SLC, UT surrounded by loved ones. Gene was born in Marietta, OH on July 18, 1944, to Carl Wesley Dovenbarger and Eleanor Mae Perdew.

Gene grew up in Mansfield, OH where he developed a love for toy trains, motorcycles, and music. He played in HS marching band, excelling in the trombone. He was accepted into the Naval School of Music at Anacostia, VA in 1963, and played at President Kennedy's funeral. He served in Navy Band at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, Pensacola, FL, Great Lakes, lL, Norfolk, VA, Treasure lsland in SF, CA, and Memphis, TN. He also served on the USS Newport News, among others. He joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in 1975, in Great Lakes, lL. After retiring from the Navy in 1986, he moved to Utah where met and married Karen Fisher in 1988, in the Ogden LDS Temple. He attended WSU and worked for the USPS in Kaysville, UT. His greatest love was his family and always kept in touch!

American Flyer model trains was one of his passions.  In fact, he started this train club in 1993.  He felt it was an honor and a huge pleasure to get together with others regularly to talk trains and run them, especially at the various shows each year.
